Product Description:
Listing Update...please note these shifters are identical in every respect to our retail boxed offerings (Model LD-4850) that sell for slightly more money. At some point during the late 80's...and probably at the point in time when Suntour was transitioning from all friction shifters to index shifters...Suntour changed their model nomenclature (i.e., numbering/labeling system). As a result, we've noted identical or near identical Suntour parts with different models numbers during this transitional period. These shifters are a good example, as we have compared our Model LD-4850 levers to these Model SL-PL10-B levers (side-by-side) and cannot find any difference between the two...down to the cables/housing, etc. included. The only difference is the packaging and the fact that we paid a little less for the shifters packaged in these heavy plastic bags, which explains their slightly lower selling price (relative to their retail boxed equivalents).
Original listing...
This offering is for one set of new-old-stock Suntour Sprint shifters (Model SL-PL10-B). These are probably the nicest friction-based shifters we have available. Their vintage is mid to late 80's, which pre-dates index shifting, and they are very close to Suntour's top-of-the-line (with only the Suntour Superbe Pro product line considered to be superior at the time). They are not finished (polished) as nice as the Superbe Pro equivalent shifters, but the all alloy levers still show very well, as would be expected of any high-end down tube shifter set.
Please also note that while these shifters are a friction-only model, they do incorporate Suntour's ratcheting design, so the shifters make a series of small "clicks" as the levers are pulled through the gears. Functionally, I do not believe there is a significant benefit to this design over silent friction shifters, but Suntour appears to have reserved this design for some of their better quality down tube shifters and we do get a fair number of folks asking about this design feature (so we thought it was worth mentioning herein).
As for condition, all the sets that we have are new and in their original retail packaging (which consists of a heavy plastic bag with Suntour branding that is still factory sealed). Also, each set includes the full complement of shifter cables (albeit quite old) and one piece of cable housing for the length of cable that wraps around the rear dropout on it's way to the rear derailleur. Please also keep in mind these are braze-on model shifters, so they will only be compatible with frames that include down tube shifter bosses (and please refer to the discussion that follow regarding down tube mounting).
Down tube mounting discussion...
Upon close inspection of the pictures to the left (and particularly the last couple of pictures that show a close-up of the mounting instructions included with the offering), please notice these shifters generally pre-date the use of fat spacers/adapters that often accompany index shifters. Instead, these shifters use thinner spacers, which will still allow for clean down tube mounting on most vintage steel frames. In other words, these thinner spacers/adapters are designed to accommodate most shifter bosses (with square-shaped...12 mm x 12 mm base platforms) found on each side of a vintage 28.6 mm steel down tube...resulting in a nice/clean look.

Note to international customers regarding shipping...
We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case.
Note to international customers regarding customs...
We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
